The scenario was adapted from a 1956 novel of the same name by Noël Calef. Associated by some critics with film noir, and introducing new narrative, cinematographic and editing techniques, the film is considered an important work in establishing the French New Wave and the New Modern Cinema. The improvised soundtrack by Miles Davis and the relationship the film establishes among music, image and emotion were considered ground-breaking. The New Wave ebbed as fast as it flowed. Tides are quite predictable, except during ecliptic lunar phases or during tsunamis. This cinema production gave us a brief snapshot of that period from genuine “noir production” to the modernistic sewer. Jean Moreau was enthralling in her portrayal. She was reminiscent of the silent film era, where facial expression and body language told the story. Ms. Moreau was outstanding, as were her counterparts. Passion was displayed without the unimaginative sexual athleticism that is the signature of the modernistic pornography of today. This film’s director showed such a clever technique of letting one’s mind fill in the spaces that we alone possess in regard to sensual imagery. It is of the viewer’s mind and not the twisted interpretations of a director’s vicarious relationship with the actors. This director was a genius., He made his mark, as did the players., Exquisite story and portrayal of that era.
