How is it to build a new life when your past turns against you? How do you look at the role of women within a religion if you grew up in an orthodox Jewish community? And what remains of your own identity if you leave your youth behind? Feldman grew up in an ultra orthodox chassidic community in Williamsburg, New York. The strict community tells her what to wear, what to eat, who to speak. If Deborah Feldman is seventeen she is married to a man she does not know. Two years later, they get their first child. Feldman is just 25 years old when her first book appears; Unorthodox: "The Schandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots" (2012). Herein she describes her memories about her escape from the strictly religious community. The book is an instant bestseller and is celebrated by the New York Times. Critics praise Feldman for her courage, strength, and independence for leaving the closed community. In her second novel "Exodus" (2015), Feldman describes the next phase of her life. A book about the sense of alienation after leaving her life in Brooklyn behind, and the search for a new identity. Feldman is currently living in Berlin and is writing and making a film. Thus her work focuses on issues that are at the interface between globalization, religion and identity. I am not a religious person, but I was raised Catholic and went to parochial school until 6th grade. I find the study of religion extraordinary, especially when the focus is on how it affects the believer, how they see themselves in the world. 15 James R James R 1 jaar geleden In the comment section, many people are disliking the interviewer. 1) English is not his first language. 2) His direct style is European and not rude. 3) Believe it or not, he does, in fact, have rapport with the interviewee. This is a very real and raw interview. Nothing is withheld and the mark of a good interviewer is not to make the interviewee 'feel comfortable' but rather, to push the envelope to get the real answers that we as the audience are looking for. 105 Celia Barker Celia Barker 1 jaar geleden (bewerkt) What an intelligent articulate woman. By far the most interesting interview I have watched in six weeks of lockdown (despite him). Thank you. 13 Elisabeth M. de Boer Elisabeth M. de Boer 1 jaar geleden For Dutch audiences Arnon Grünberg is a familiar figure. He has been a fixture of the Dutch literary scene since his debut novel Blue Monday’s came out when he was 18 years old. He has won many literary prizes and is more known as a writer and opinion maker than as an interviewer. Extreme directness is a typically Dutch feature and here it is even stronger as he clearly feels an intra-Jewish bond as two people who both grew up under the shadow of the Holocaust. (Both of his parents, who had him and his sister at an advanced age, were in Auschwitz, if I remember correctly. I even think it may have been where they met, but I would have to check.) This as a partial answer to all the stunned reactions by non-Dutch people to his style. I saw it as sibling-like rivalry stemming from shared experience. 17 Marianne Nimon Marianne Nimon 9 maanden geleden A brilliant & beautiful mind & someone I would love to emulate despite being old enough to be her mother! It's truth underlying what some comments here are calling "friendly banter." I think her sense of a figure wanting to exercise power over her is extremely sharp. Back in the day there was no support , they were expected to just move forward, forget about it and they did. But the price they paid and their descendants paid. We understand more and more about mental health issues now, so it is hard to imagine how these people managed. It would seem that this was one way, to double down and become the most rigid and conservative in their religious beliefs. 12 Nosheen Majeed Nosheen Majeed 1 jaar geleden (bewerkt) She is funny, direct with a dry sense of humour. If you spend any amount of time with Dutch people, you quickly learn to expect their unvarnished opinions and not to take things personally! Also don't forget what be deemed rude or inappropriate in one language or culture is not necessarily so in others. 66 Grace Batarseh Grace Batarseh 1 jaar geleden You are a role model. Deborah is an example of strength and determination with such an astute awareness of the world around her. Personally, I did not like the movie which manipulated the beautiful writing into a commercial show. While Deborah exposes her experiences, she does so with gentleness, humility and love; not with the unfortunate North-American (generally) crass approach of TV-Reality punch for effect. May she be “really” free to write more truthful stories depicting the real life of the ordinary people we all are. 3 frank stein frank stein 1 jaar geleden (bewerkt) It's a little unusual for an interviewer to start the interview with an anecdote about the way he looks - especially when he's just requested "no anecdotes in the Q&A please". The interviewer is obnoxious and good for this great writer and for sharing her knowledge. 1 Leslie Young Leslie Young 1 jaar geleden It is obvious why Feldman had to make an exodus from her cult community. She is an highly intelligent woman even with little in the way of a formal, secular education. It must have been an extraordinarily stifling existence for her, living as a Satmar Jewish woman. As a Reform Jew, I find her story a fascinating parallel to all the other ultra religious sects (Christian, Muslim, etc) to which she aptly refers. The Satmar ultra-orthodox also have some uncomfortable similarities to Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." I am inspired by her strength to live life on her own terms. 3 Fief van Rossem Fief van Rossem 1 jaar geleden 🇨🇦 Deborah, you are amazing, love how you were able to control this interview, well done !!!! 23 J. If people are being turned off by the oppressive nature of their religious observances, they should try to find something else, more welcoming and more meaningful. I am from a Reform movement of Judaism, my paternal family lineage, from a conservative form of Judaism. I find the Reform method to be more enriching, more welcoming and if someone doesn't agree with me, that's fine with me. I even went to Christian churches of my past friends and i definitely know how kind Christianity it is in form of enrichment and spiritual renewal. I find nothing wrong with Christianity in the form of faith, but often, Christianity is often abused by false Christians trying to establish their own virulent form of extremism, to a religion filled with divine purity and spiritualism. And i think atheists should try and establish a friendlier form of relationship with Christians and not to be objective even if certain things they don't always agree with. When I was growing up in 1950s America, in a fairly assimilated environment, almost the only Yiddish words our generation knew were the "juicy" words. The vulgar words for genitals, for sexual acts, scatological vocabularly, etc. It was only as an adult that I learned that Yiddish was a full language with its own vocabulary and literature, scholarship in such diverse fields as history, philology, sociology, libraries containing thousands of books. Those of my contemporaries who did not look further into the matter would even say occasionally, when they heard I wanted to study the Yiddish language: "Yiddish isn't a language." But of course it is. Just as every language I know of, Yiddish has its rich range of dirty words. The truth may be that growing up in a strict religious community, young women like Deborah were supposed to be kept ignorant of that aspect of the language. -- To confirm what I say, just go to Wikipedia or Google and ask it to translate any dirty word that exists in English into Yiddish. 3 Cheryl Reuter Cheryl Reuter 1 jaar geleden Just the tip😂 sure resonates here in The USA Mila G-R Mila G-R 3 weken geleden I find that she makes sweeping and incorrect statements about communities other than Satmar. It can be very emotionally confusing and draining, and you may be more used to the impure state and the restrictions, such that intimacy becomes difficult when it is allowed, because the mind is still in a mode where it feels it must restrict. I don't think the mikveh (purity bath) is seen universally as a method of policing. There is a large amount of moral weight riding on the process being done properly, so to my knowledge (at least in the more modern circles), it is seen as a helper who makes sure the rules are followed and no step was missed or performed incorrectly. Young women who are informed and prepared with knowledge of the process know enough to request accommodations that reduce the discomfort or embarrassment that may result. But in stricter circles, or for someone who doesn't have full information as to her rights in the process, it clearly is cause for trauma. Moreover she does not explain clearly or truly everything about the Jewish tradition. The interviewer is not familiar with the Jewish topic either, he is like a wannabe. Btw, Chabad does not convert into Judaism, they are looking for the lost JEWS only, Chabad has a mission to bring back the lost freier Jews. Mrs Deborah Feldman with her trauma cannot give a clear unbiased opinion about Jews and the Judaism; the Satmar Hassidim are very far on the ultra-orthodox range, notwithstanding they are doing some good job too, for example by maintaining the institute of family and bringing up children. Mrs. Feldman’s case is NOT a reflection of a widely practiced Jewish life, even within the Satmar community. Her family was a kind of an outsider too. She has an identity issue. I feel empathy for her. The European society is highly conformist too, although since last 50 years the Europe goes far away from the Abrahamic religions to the preference of the neo-pagan style cults, energy healing and shaman practices in the so called therapy/ wellbeing area. Very sad she sees it in the way she does. I'm a Kallah (meaning bride) teacher and for her to say that a wife is not desired or unwanted during the days when a woman is on her cycle is so not true, she completely took in a very very wrong way. Besides the point she is completing neglecting that the husband is also a part of this separation. When a woman and man are separating to wait for the cycle to end they have an opportunity to connect in a spiritual, emotional and intellectual way which will build the physical reconnection after the mikvah in a way that on a monthly basis you are experiencing a connection on all levels all at once. I don't know anyone who wouldn't want that with their significant other. To have a bad experience is understandable we are all humans and carry baggage, but to assume from one or two bad experiences that the culture is all bad all the time within all households and relationships is an untruth. I pray she finds the truth within her lost soul and finds direction to her true purpose. This can't be it. Forgive me for being direct I do understand and empathize but there is another side to this story that isn't being told. 3 nacionalcapo nacionalcapo 1 jaar geleden I find it really difficult to understand the interviewer!! 1 sara35ish sara35ish 1 jaar geleden I liked the book UNORTHODOX , but the Netflix series is unwatchable 2 jackie Newman jackie Newman 1 jaar geleden I thought Deborah was very much in control .. How did this man come to be interviewing, in public, speaking? I looked him up. He's a writer and maybe a written interview could have worked. But for television? Goodness! I'm appalled. He has no emotional intelligence (even less than your average mediocre male interviewer) and it's painful to watch him. Obviously, you don’t know anything at all about Chabad. I have attended Chabad for 12 years and not once have I heard of their deceased leader as being the “messiah”. Chabad is not trying to “sell” anything to anyone. It is a movement that is devoted to bringing unaffiliated Jews closer to their Jewish roots by showing love, generosity and non-judgment. There is not an ounce of deception in their actions. Chabad is an open and warm movement that has welcomed many Jews unconditionally to participate in the many beautiful Jewish customs, traditions and holidays. They are not trying to “convert”people into Judaism, they are simply trying to illuminate the beauty of Judaism to Jews who don’t know much about their religion. So please do some research before you so hastily speak non-facts to impressionable audiences who just take your inaccurate words as being true. 1 Anna93 Anna93 1 jaar geleden I am half German and I blame European persecution of Jews for the trauma that has led to this.
