Wikipedia 62,988 views 17 Sept 2020 #CanaryIslands #Lesbos #MigrationCrisis While the struggle continues for a European solution for the migrants on Lesbos, the next refugee drama is unfolding at another European external border, the Canary Islands. More than 4,000 African migrants have arrived on Spain's Canary Islands since the beginning of the year. Many of them are fleeing the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel with boats departing from Morocco and the territory of Western Sahara. They're also departing hundreds of kilometres farther south from Mauritaina and Senegal. While arrivals to mainland Spain fell by half compared to the same period last year, landings in the Canary Islands increased nearly sevenfold. Island authorities say they have reached their limit. DW's Jan-Philipp Scholz spoke with refugees and locals on the island of Fuerteventura. Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutsche... treacherous journey on the atlantic 0:20 ocean 0:21 many of them are fleeing the 0:22 deteriorating security situation in the 0:24 sahel with boats departing from morocco 0:26 and the territory of western sahara 0:28 they're also departing hundreds of 0:30 kilometers farther south from mauritania 0:32 and senegal while arrivals to 0:36 mainland spain fell by half compared to 0:39 the same period 0:40 last year landings in the canary islands 0:42 increased nearly 0:44 seven-fold the sea is surprisingly calm 0:48 this afternoon at least for weta ventura 0:50 abdul kamara and his friend ibrahim 0:52 toure remember well the high waves when 0:55 they arrived on the spanish island 0:57 they'd already spent three days on the 0:58 sea in a rubber dinghy 1:00 the atlantic crossing between africa and 1:02 the canary islands is considered the 1:04 most dangerous escape route in the world 1:08 suddenly we heard air leaking from the 1:10 rubber dinghy 1:12 at that moment everyone was scared to 1:14 death i had the feeling that this could 1:15 really be the end for us 1:17 i thought about my little sister who 1:19 would then be left without me 1:22 i thought about friends i would never 1:24 see again 1:28 [Music] 1:34 the leak was successfully patched and 1:36 abdul reached the spanish coast 1:38 in the last few weeks alone more than 1 1:40 000 migrants like him have arrived in 1:42 the canary islands 1:44 many mediterranean countries have 1:46 tightened controls against immigration 1:48 because of corona 1:49 and the well-trodden route via libya has 1:51 become dominated by criminal gangs 1:54 with such developments the dangerous 1:56 atlantic route has become increasingly 1:58 attractive 1:59 new arrivals are placed in largely empty 2:01 hotels the island's tourism association 2:03 has sharp criticism for the government's 2:06 decision 2:08 we're currently working to promote 2:10 ventura as a safe and clean island 2:12 that's in the best of health nobody 2:14 likes to see a hotel full of migrants 2:16 now 2:16 that's reality 2:21 at the government level island director 2:23 domingo fuentes 2:24 also receives criticism from other sides 2:27 human rights activists criticize that 2:29 the migrants are sealed off in hotels 2:31 and don't have access to asylum 2:33 procedures 2:34 they warn of conditions similar to those 2:36 in greece where the migrants lack the 2:38 most basic necessities 2:39 fuentes rejects the criticism 2:43 we are a southern external border of the 2:45 european union here 2:46 in the same way that the eu is currently 2:48 addressing the issues of migration from 2:50 the near and middle east 2:52 it should also address the problems 2:53 arising from migration here on the 2:55 southern border 2:59 and adding to the stress the government 3:01 sees growing concern over coronavirus 3:03 infection rates 3:04 immediately upon arrival people reaching 3:06 the island are tested 3:08 in one of the last groups half of the 3:10 tests were positive 3:11 many newcomers like kamara and today 3:14 want to leave the island as soon as 3:15 possible and move on to the european 3:17 mainland 3:18 where exactly they don't know yet the 3:20 main thing is a place where they can 3:22 find work and are safe from deportation 3:24 back home Spanish officials warning 3:26 let's go straight to fuente ventura now 3:28 in dws john phillip schultz good day to 3:30 you jan phillip spanish officials 3:33 are warning that the difficulties on 3:35 fuerteventura that we've just been 3:37 looking at will only be 3:38 increasing with the number of new 3:40 migrant arrivals set to surge 3:42 what are they expecting 3:46 yes exactly some people are already 3:48 warning that 3:50 there could be conditions like on lesbos 3:52 if the crisis continues for 3:54 too long and there are too many new 3:56 arrivals on a daily basis 4:00 the canary islands have already been a 4:02 popular 4:03 destination for migrants mainly 10 4:06 15 years ago then migration routes via 4:09 the mediterranean became 4:10 more popular but i think there are also 4:12 a lot of reasons 4:14 why the route via the canary islands is 4:17 becoming more and more popular again we 4:20 have 4:20 the problem that the conditions in libya 4:23 a typical transit country 4:25 the conditions there are horrible 4:27 migrants are kidnapped 4:29 sometimes even killed we have increased 4:32 border controls through the due to the 4:34 pandemic and 4:35 last but not least we have a lot of 4:37 desperate people in the countries of 4:39 origin especially in western africa 4:40 especially in the style 4:42 region there are more and more conflicts 4:45 and more and more desperate people 4:47 willing even to risk their lives what's 4:49 the spanish government doing to help 4:50 those 4:52 especially those whose lives become 4:54 endangered while 4:55 while making this very very difficult 4:57 crossing 5:00 not not enough at least that's what a 5:02 lot of activists say and that's also 5:05 what the human rights commissioner of 5:07 the european union 5:09 said in a state statement recently 5:12 they criticized that spain does not do 5:15 enough in the 5:16 uh search and rescue missions they also 5:19 criticize 5:20 bad housing conditions and especially 5:22 here on the canary islands a lot of 5:25 activists 5:26 criticize that migrants don't have 5:28 access to 5:29 proper asylum procedures they even speak 5:32 about deportations without a proper 5:35 legal basis and they stress the need for 5:38 more search and rescue missions briefly 5:41 if you could local politicians are 5:42 putting the blame 5:43 on the eu what do they want to see 5:46 happen 5:49 i think first of all they want more 5:51 attention of course all the focus is 5:53 on the eastern mediterranean especially 5:55 on greece 5:56 at the moment of course they also want 5:58 more financial aid from the european 6:00 union 6:01 but most of all i think they want what 6:03 most countries that have external eu 6:06 borders want 6:07 they want a european solution they don't 6:09 want to be left alone with the problem 6:11 jan phillips thanks very much for that 6:13 from fuerteventura Greek police move in 6:16 a police operation is now underway on 6:18 the greek island of lesbos to move 6:20 thousands of migrants and refugees 6:22 into a new temporary tent city many have 6:24 been sleeping on the streets after 6:26 a fire destroyed their refugee camp 6:29 authorities say the operation has so far 6:31 passed off peacefully but 6:32 many migrants are reluctant to move into 6:35 the new facility 6:38 rows of tents on the greek island of 6:40 lesbos 6:41 they've been set up for migrants 6:43 displaced by the fires that gutted the 6:45 maurya camp 6:47 on thursday greek police started moving 6:49 hundreds into them 6:53 over the past few days migrants had 6:55 chosen to stay on the streets in squalid 6:57 conditions 6:58 many saying they'd rather remain here 7:00 than run the risk of being detained for 7:02 months in a completely new camp 7:05 some have even returned to what remains 7:07 of moria 7:08 they said the temporary tents are not 7:10 enough they want 7:12 long-term solutions 7:28 they put us in a place where there's no 7:29 life and it's like a jungle 7:33 a human cannot live in such tents 7:36 early on wednesday only about 1 200 of 7:40 the roughly 13 000 migrants rendered 7:42 homeless by the fires 7:43 had moved to the new temporary 7:45 accommodation the un refugee agency said 7:48 there is capacity for about another 8 7:50 000 people 7:51 and had urged people to move it had said 7:53 it's the only way forward 7:58 people who have been in moriah can come 8:01 to this camp and we encourage them to 8:03 come there 8:04 because it's from here that their 8:06 process will continue 8:07 that their procedure will continue that 8:09 solutions can be found 8:11 and that people can leave the island 8:14 because 8:14 the idea is not that people remain 8:17 forever 8:18 on the island of lesvos but while 8:21 several european states have offered to 8:23 take in migrants from lesbos 8:25 others say they will not they're 8:27 offering to provide more aid 8:29 and even more tense instead The very latest 8:33 let's get the very latest now with darth 8:35 natalis a journalist 8:36 on lesbos good day to you daphne can can 8:39 you tell us 8:40 about the police operation now underway 8:43 to 8:43 move the migrants and refugees into the 8:46 new tent city that we 8:47 just saw being set up hello from the 8:51 island of lesbos 8:52 yes indeed there was a police operation 8:54 that started very early in the morning 8:57 uh right before uh dawn actually police 9:00 forces 9:01 uh brought riot buses and they blocked 9:03 off 9:04 the road where the people have been 9:05 staying for the past eight 9:08 or nine days uh they blocked off the 9:11 road so that 9:12 people would not leave and sort of 9:14 contain them in this area where they 9:16 have been staying 9:17 already all these days uh there's the 9:20 traffic has been 9:22 disrupted since uh since then since the 9:24 people are living here on the streets 9:26 the shops on the area some a couple of 9:29 supermarkets 9:30 and gas stations have been they cannot 9:33 they cannot operate so since this 9:36 morning 9:37 the police went around to people and 9:40 and told them that they will have to go 9:42 to the new camp 9:44 to access facilities there water 9:47 electricity they will be registered 9:51 there in the new site again they will be 9:54 handed 9:55 non-food items sleeping bags tents 9:58 a smaller test actually because there 10:00 are tents there 10:02 and other non-food items that they that 10:05 the agencies the aid agencies are 10:07 providing 10:09 and uh there's at the moment the latest 10:12 that i have is that 10:13 there's 2 300 people around 2 10:17 300. okay i want to get to that question 10:20 how many people are not going into the 10:22 camps and how many have already 10:24 moved into the new facilities 10:28 so um the latest information is that 10:31 at least 2 300 people have 10:35 gone since uh yesterday morning in 10:38 in the camp the operation started seven 10:41 in the morning very early 10:42 uh where peop where police authorities 10:45 were waking up people telling them that 10:47 they will have to pack their stuff 10:49 and slowly head to the camp it's not a 10:51 it's not a big distance 10:53 to walk or over there and there's still 10:56 many people that 10:57 are reluctant to go to the new facility 11:00 they 11:01 they think or they have heard that there 11:03 is not 11:04 there's no water they told me that they 11:06 think that there's no electricity 11:08 or that they're going to be closed in 11:10 the camp and will not be able to 11:13 to come out okay there's 11:16 also um we have to leave it there daphne 11:19 thanks so much for bringing us up to 11:21 date 11:21 on the situation right now uh at the 11:24 moria camp there 11:25 right outside it on lesbos thanks very 11:27 much European Parliament debate 11:31 well the european parliament's due to 11:32 discuss the situation on lesbos during 11:34 today's debate our correspondent 11:36 barbara basil standing by for more on 11:38 that barbara 11:39 can we expect the eu to agree to a 11:42 common approach to 11:43 resolving the situation on lisbos 11:47 there is a no wonder no common approach 11:49 because as we know this is the most 11:51 poisonous political battleground in the 11:53 european union so 11:55 even when this debate was scheduled in 11:57 the european parliament there were some 11:59 right-wing and some populist parties who 12:00 said 12:01 we don't want this debate uh you know 12:03 where is the problem it was the refugees 12:05 themselves who are supposed to have put 12:07 the camp 12:07 set the camp on fire and so we we don't 12:11 want to talk about this 12:12 but we just of course the debate is 12:14 taking place there is a majority against 12:16 that very hard line 12:18 uh position but it shows how deep the 12:21 divisions go 12:22 we just heard the the european 12:24 commissioner ilv johansen 12:26 the commissioner for refugees and she 12:27 said progress on maurya 12:29 is slow and that is like we just saw 12:32 people 12:33 mistrust the the the local 12:37 the police and the people on the ground 12:40 and and they say we don't want to go in 12:41 those camps anymore because we'll 12:43 be stuck there forever and after five 12:45 years of people being stuck in moria 12:48 no wonder so solutions here are 12:50 difficult at the moment 12:51 the discussion just goes about getting 12:54 more humanitarian aid there 12:56 and there is no real long-term or even 12:58 medium-term solution inside it seems 13:00 okay we're focusing right now on moria 13:02 but greece is not the only country with 13:04 an eu extra 13:05 external border that's currently 13:07 struggling with an influx of migrants 13:11 absolutely not nobody's talking about 13:13 spain because the the southern europe uh 13:15 southern mediterranean route 13:17 has been sort of come back to life 13:19 towards the end of last year 13:22 people mostly from the sahel area in 13:24 conflict 13:25 conflict zones down there like mali uh 13:28 people from cameroon and so on 13:30 they've been moving up through morocco 13:32 and and they have now 13:34 ended up on the on the canary islands 13:36 and it's the same situation 13:38 we don't have exact figures but it's 13:40 several thousand people that 13:42 have arrived there already and uh it's 13:45 the same situation as in greece 13:46 the islands are a bottleneck and the 13:49 greek 13:50 the the greek authorities are not the 13:52 spanish authorities are not willing or 13:54 not capable of moving people on from 13:57 there 13:57 same situation again because they say 14:00 nobody in europe is taking these 14:02 refugees off our hands 14:04 there is no redistribution and that is 14:06 still the point we're stuck at 14:08 barbara thanks so much for looking into 14:10 this as that debate continues today 14:13 in uh brussels thank you very much 15:33 Now playing Refugees on the Canary Islands | DW Documentary DW Documentary 205K views 9 months ago 11:53 Now playing Spain’s Canary Islands
